Speech, Speech!

February 12, 2015 Do you know what an elevator speech is? Even if you don’t know what it is, you should have a bunch of them. If someone asks you what you do, you could concisely tell them, right. If someone asked you how you became or how you know you are a Christian you should have an answer. 1 Peter 1:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason for the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” You should...

Christian Hedonism

February 5, 2015 A pastor whose writing I appreciate is John Piper. He is know for his emphasis on our delighting in God. One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4 John Piper prefers the chief end of man to be to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. I find this emphasis of Mr. Piper to be biblical and complimentary with the aims...

Christmas in Genesis

December 17, 2014 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15 In the fourth verse of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing the children have been singing these words, “Rise, the woman’s conquering seed, Bruise in us the serpent’s head”. It is a beautiful thing that Christ the new born King, the second Adam is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Adam and Eve to send a deliverer to defeat Satan and “Reinstate us in Thy love”. Merry...

God In Heartache

December 12, 2014 Psalm 63 O GOD, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.  Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.  Thus will I bless thee while I live:  I will lift up my hands in thy name.  My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful...

Reaping What We Sow

December 4, 2015 Reaping What We Sow I was reading Douglas Wilson’s excellent book Excused Absence, which brought up an interesting perspective I hadn’t considered before. Douglas condemned past Christians based on how they had legislated tax funded Christian education in the early public schools which propagated a worldview foreign to non Christian tax payers. He was saying, that what goes around comes around. We should be careful when complaining that public schools are imposing a foreign worldview on Christians today. We actually started it. Past Christians were guilty of the same injustices we Christian may complain about today....

Advent the Two Comings of Jesus

November 25, 2015 The Season of Advent Jesus and his two comings Advent season is now upon us. This is a Western Church calendar celebration which many of our churches today no longer engage in. Advent means coming or arrival and for the church this coming refers to Christ’s coming 2000 years ago and his not yet second coming. Both comings are reasons for celebration and hope. In Bible prophesies often concerning Christ’s coming there are often 2 or more meanings. These multiple meaning confused many religious experts of the day who didn’t understand that in order for Jesus...

Sea Glass

November 21, 2015 As a young boy spending my summers at the family cottage I would walk along the shore line in my search for sea shells and sea glass. Sea glass is what we called the worn smooth pieces of broken glass bottles of different colours that if you had a keen eye you could find mixed with the pebbles and sand. This glass has usually lost its rough edges worn smooth by the abrasion of water, sand and pebbles over time. Sea glass reminds me of children who are shaped by the influence of different things in...

Our God is Evil?

November 4, 2014 Our Provincial government intends to reintroduce its sex education program for elementary schools September 2015. In 2010 there was such public outrage over the then proposed new sex education program that it was put on hold. Now that the Liberal Party has a majority government and parents maybe tired of fighting for the minds and hearts of their children the new sex education program will likely be implemented this September. This particular example of Government morals and values trumping parents’ is simply the trickle down indoctrination of the pagan values of our provinces’ political and educational...

Proactive Discipline

October 20, 2014 “Discipline isn’t what you do when children misbehave; it’s what you do so they won’t.” Ronald Morrish I appreciate this quote because it causes us to think about discipline being more than reactionary but rather formative, so this quote doesn’t go far enough. The purpose of God’s discipline is to conform us to the image of His dear Son. Thus it is not so we won’t misbehave but rather so we will want to obey. How is our discipline working so that those we are training want to obey rather than just not misbehave? Early training...
